At the moment there too many pot holes on the road! Yes, potholes in the UK – all shapes and sizes! At times I squeal when I hit one just thinking of how much the bill will be to replace a tyre! Following a car accident at the end of 2024 which came as a surprise with a sudden ‘boom’ from behind and a car written off from the impact. It has made me a bit vigilant and conscious of lots of things whilst I drive!

Let’s play a game for a moment – How many potholes have you passed on your journey today or yesterday?

As usual, it is the early morning rush hour driving in the dark when every sense awakens.

Last year there was a reorganisation at work, which meant that there were significant changes. I think I am good at compartmentalising my thoughts and feelings, but, apparently am not best at it any more with age and hormones catching up!

Like everyone else we are all juggling many balls: for me being a mum to an adult now and a teen, a wife, back to being a student at university means constant tick tock tick tock …. and at times life throws you some lemons 🍋 ! They say ‘if life throws you lemons make some lemonade ‘ it used to be possible at the moment that feels impossible at times.

How many balls are you juggling?

The route to work is familiar and I know it by heart even when the intuitive car every morning automatically pings when I get in “Navigate: Calculate route to work’! It is useful to know the ETA! Nowadays, technology is so intelligent, at times the thought of living without it is mind boggling! At the same time it is scary the thought of where all the data our gadgets collect is!

Back to the drive, I used to enjoy car journeys as it gave me headspace to reflect and decompress. However , recently, the joy of enjoying the car ride and listening to the radio is filled with mixed emotions and a tight knot on stomach and chest feels heavy!

It is yet another day – have you felt that feeling?

Once in a while when I hear Lewis Capaldi’s song ‘Survive’ – I sing it out aloud as I feel it sings to my heart the last few months.

Music has a way of keeping us going. As I grow older I have realised how listening to the radio was uplifting when growing up – even when there was no electricity or the TV wasn’t working or TV couldn’t be replaced because mum didn’t have the money to buy one! Songs have a way of touching us in different ways!

But, what does all this have to do with potholes anyway! We all have some form of holes in our lives and at times checking in with yourself is important – “You cannot pour from an empty cup! “. It is ok if the body reminds you that you need to fix it! Sometimes ‘you have to slow down in order to go fast!’

Change has a way of touching different buttons in our system and comes with its complexities. As leaders we need to think the impact of change it has on people. With the right ingredients we can try to fix the holes to make the journey better keep tuning in as we unravel the holes!
